摘要:
Physically attractive individuals experience a range of advantages in adulthood including higher earnings; yet, how attractiveness influences earlier consequential decisions is not well understood. This paper estimates the effect of attractiveness on engagement in risky behaviours in adolescence. We find marked effects across a range of risky behaviours with notable contrasts. More attractive adolescents are more likely to engage in underage drinking; while they are less likely to smoke, use drugs, or practice unprotected sex. Investigation into the underlying channels reveals that popularity, self-esteem, and personality attractiveness have roles as mechanisms. Our findings suggest physical attractiveness in adolescence carries long-lasting consequences over the life course.
相貌好的人在成年时期会经历包括更高的收入等一系列优势；然而，相貌如何影响个体人生早期的重要决定尚不清楚。本文估计了相貌对青春期少年参与健康危险行为的影响。我们发现，相貌对一系列健康风险行为有明显不同的影响：相貌好的青春期少年更有可能参与未成年饮酒；但他们更少参与吸烟、吸毒或进行无保护措施的性行为。对内在渠道的深入研究表明，受欢迎程度、自尊和人格吸引力具有机制作用。我们的研究结果表明，青春期相貌会在生命周期过程中对个体产生长期影响。
主讲人介绍:
Anwen Zhang is an applied microeconomist and currently Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in Economics at the Adam Smith Business School, University of Glasgow. His research focuses on policy-relevant issues related to health and education. His more recent work aims to understand what matters for mental health. Prior to joining University of Glasgow, he held research positions at the London School of Economics and Political Science and the University of Cambridge. He received his PhD in Economics from Lancaster University.
张安文，经济学博士（兰卡斯特大学），现任英国格拉斯哥大学经济学副教授(Senior Lecturer)。在加入格拉斯哥大学之前，他在伦敦政治经济学院和剑桥大学担任研究职位。他从事的应用微观经济学研究旨在通过将类实验方法应用于大规模观察性数据，来回答卫生和教育领域的相关经济学问题。他关注的问题包括学校教育、青少年发展、心理健康、卫生政策等。其研究发表于Journal of Political Economy,Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences,Social Science & Medicine,Lancet等经济学、科学、社会科学和医学期刊。
